In November 2021, Lock City Books began our Read With Rescues program, partnering with local rescues Cat by Cat Inc. and STARS Inc. We have  adoptable cats in the shop and children are encouraged to read to them -allowing them to practice reading aloud and helping the cats to develop socialization skills. Since it’s beginning we have had 16 adoptions: Boba, Midnight, Toro, Cali, Jock, Ronald, Mocha, Mac, Nala, Robbie, Mack, Panda, Prowler, Carmela, Cutie, and Ash.

Lock City Books was informed by the city that as a B-2 zoned business we are not able to have animals at the shop, but that we may apply for a special use permit to allow them. We will be submitting our application at the end of the month and it will go before the board on September 12th who will hear our case and put it to a vote. 

We would love to show the City of Lockport Planning Board that the community supports this initiative. If you would like to see our Reads With Rescues program continue, please consider signing the petition. We will submit the signatures and comments with our application. Thank you.
