FIRST KILL, a Romeo and Juliet love story with a supernatural twist, premiered on Netflix on June 10, 2022, to much fanfare. In the teen drama, a family of vampires and a family of monster hunters vow to kill each other. However, when the daughters of the sworn enemies fall in love, the age-old feud must be put on hold before the girls are caught in the cross-fire. After the release of FIRST KILL’s first trailer, the show immediately began trending on Twitter. Fan art and fan fiction soon followed. Yet, despite an opening weekend that saw the show fluctuate between the #2 and #3 spots in the U.S., before settling into the Top Ten for the first three weeks after its release, Netflix canceled the show 7 weeks after it premiered.
According to the press, Netflix claimed the show failed to meet the required completion numbers (number of viewers who watch every episode). FIRST KILL was also ranked #3 globally for the first month of its release, and earned 100 million viewing hours in its first 28 days of release, and had a 90% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. In other words, FIRST KILL deserves a second season.
In its eight-episode first season, FIRST KILL garnered a very supportive fan base on social media and began trending even before the show aired. It continues to trend now, almost daily, due to organized fan efforts to save the show or just because fans continue the conversation of it every day with the same passion. The first season ends on a heartbreaking, cliffhanger note, in anticipation of a second season. Fans (First Killers) are very anxious to see the story play out.
Renewing First Kill for a season two would give us the opportunity to prove how much this show means to us. If Netflix wants a bigger audience, we will bring them one; we already have. It’s a quick look on social media to see how many more people have heard about the show after its cancelation, after the fans’ promotion and initiatives. We simply need the opportunity to demonstrate that FIRST KILL’s fans will show up. And we will show up because representation matters. The quality representation of queer characters, African American families, and strong women MATTERS!
First Killers are growing in number, and our passion will not wane any time soon. Please sign the petition and share it widely. Join us in our daily talk about the show, and continue spreading its word. Let’s show Netflix that we would like them to renew the show or give it up to a new home. We have seen new users binge-watching FIRST KILL from beginning to end, let’s keep that up! Let’s show Netflix and all platforms we are serious and we mean it. We can give even more numbers like we have been doing and will continue to do so because falling in love with our show is easy, but we can never love moderately
