#Create #Community #Garden #Bucktown
CONTEXT While Bucktown is of relative low density in terms of residents, its footprint is one of overdevelopment and compaction, which has come at the sacrifice of public greenspace and the architectural integrity of our important historical neighborhood responsible for the erection of the surrounding Chicagoland neighborhoods.
Many Chicago neighborhoods are host to community gardens however Bucktown has no such public neighborhood asset. Community gardens uplift, enrich and strengthen community as well as beautify our neighborhood.
PROPOSAL Create a public community kitchen-driven garden in Bucktown at the now-vacant double lots located in the very geographical heart of Bucktown at 2133-2135 W. Charleston Street.
MISSION Bring community together in a shared active celebration of food through a sustainable kitchen-driven neighborhood public community garden focused on cultivating edible herbs, edible flowers and fruit and nut trees for culinary and medicinal consumption.
WHAT IT IS A central hub for The Bucktown Garden Walk. A programmable and educational public greenspace that celebrates food. A platform for culinary demonstration from local Covid-fractured restaurants and chefs to help reinvigorate local commerce. An opportunity to add open space to an overbuilt community footprint consequently preserving one of the most historically intact stretches of Bucktown.
A place for all to grow together by growing together!
This is not an allotment garden, a gardening club, a playground, a dog park or a member-only space.
